Questions Perth homeowners ask about Hot Water System Electrical
Do I need an electrician for a hot water system?
Yes. Any hardwired electrical connection to a hot water system has to be done by a licensed electrician. Doesn’t matter whether it’s a new install, a replacement or just switching the tariff, if it involves wiring to the switchboard, it’s electrical work and it’s notifiable.
Your plumber handles the water side. The hot water system electrical work: dedicated circuit, element connection, tariff setup, compliance certificate, that’s our job. Both trades need to do their part before the system can run.
Can you coordinate with my plumber?
That’s how most of these jobs work. The plumber does the pipework, we handle the electric hot water wiring and ideally we’re there on the same day so nobody’s waiting on the other trade.
Tell us who your plumber is and when they’re booked in. We’ll coordinate timing directly with them or work around their schedule. If the plumber’s already on site and waiting, call us we prioritise same-day attendance for exactly this situation.
What is off peak tariff switching?
Most electric hot water systems in WA can be connected to an off peak tariff basically, the system heats overnight when electricity rates are lower. It cuts your running costs without changing anything about how the system works. You still get hot water when you need it.
Not every system qualifies and the switchboard needs the right metering setup. We check eligibility as part of the hot water system electrical work and handle the tariff connection if it makes sense for your setup.
How long does the electrical connection take?
Straightforward jobs replacing a like-for-like system where the circuit’s already in place, take about an hour. New electric hot water system installations where we need to run a dedicated circuit from the switchboard take two to three hours depending on the distance and switchboard capacity.
If tariff switching is involved, that adds a small amount of time on top. We give you the full timeframe in the quote so you and your plumber can plan around it.
How much does hot water system electrical cost?
It depends on the job. A simple reconnection on an existing circuit is the cheaper end. A full new dedicated circuit, tariff switching and switchboard work costs more. Distance between the switchboard and the unit makes a difference too.
Fixed quote upfront. No call-out fee. We’ll tell you the price before we start and it won’t change on the day. Tell us what system’s going in and we’ll send through a number usually within 24 hours.
